Satish K. Tripathi
UB President
Professor, Computer Science and Engineering

I have been in your shoes. I left my home country to expand my knowledge and my opportunities by traveling to Canada where I received my master's and doctorate degrees.

These credentials and experiences brought me to the United States where I have built a career, a family, a rewarding life supporting higher education.

I assure you that the rewards of a world class education far outweigh the challenges. And as an institution, I promise that we will do everything we can to support you.

UB is an international community and a welcoming campus for students, faculty and visitors from across the globe, and is committed to remaining so.

We believe the diversity and global perspectives and experiences of our university community members—from our many students, faculty, and staff who have come to the U.S. from around the world—are among our most important institutional strengths and vital to our success as a premier public research university.

As president of UB, I promise to continue to uphold and protect these values that we hold dear."

Where We Come From

Students and faculty from across the globe come to our school to conduct high-impact original research in science and engineering, to become leaders in engineering disciplines and related fields, and to find creative solutions to the most pressing challenges facing society.

We are a culturally diverse community with science and engineering students from 73 different countries across the world and 33 states/territories here in the U.S.

This map shows the home countries and states of current SEAS students, both undergraduate and graduate, as of Fall 2021.

Our school is also home to over 250 faculty members from 23 countries.

For the 19th straight year, UB has ranked among the top 30 U.S. institutions hosting international students by the Institute of International Education.

University Support for International Students

Excellent support services for international students and scholars are one reason UB has managed to triple its international enrollment in the past 15 years.

UB offers a special, week-long orientation for international students, along with an array of ongoing support services designed to help members of our international community succeed in the classroom and enjoy all that Buffalo has to offer.

International Student Services (ISS)

International Student and Scholar Services is the office at UB that helps members of our international community adjust to life in Buffalo. Support includes immigration services, trips, activities, workshops on all aspects of studying and living in the U.S., and more.

English Language Institute

The English Language Institute in the UB's Graduate School of Education offers English language instruction, cultural orientation and pre-academic training to international students, scholars and professionals.

The institute conducts UB’s Intensive English Program, which specializes in preparing students for university study, along with the English as a Second Language Program for current undergraduate and graduate students.

International Student Clubs

At UB, we are fortunate to have many vibrant International Student Clubs, which are a wonderful resource for new students.

UB's international student clubs and organizations possess a wealth of information about academic programs, campus resources, social opportunities and life in Buffalo. While the clubs are all very different, they revolve around specific countries, cultures, languages and/or religions. It is easy to get involved with any club in which you have an interest—regardless of your own affiliation.

SEAS Student Clubs and Organizations

In addition to our campus-wide international student clubs, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences offers over 45 science and engineering related clubs and organizations where you can explore your ideas, network with SEAS professors and industry professionals, and gain hands-on research experience.
