Research Clusters

Faculty in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have formed four research clusters to leverage shared expertise and forge collaborations that bolster innovation in priority areas of research.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cluster

The Artificial Intelligence Cluster unites faculty across departments who share research and educational interests in AI and its applications. The cluster serves as a hub for developing interdisciplinary research proposals, strengthening strategic partnerships, and expanding UB SEAS leadership in AI-driven discovery, design, and decision-making. Areas of focus include machine learning, trustworthy and ethical AI, large-scale data analytics, and AI applications across science, engineering, and society.

Personalized Health Cluster

The Personalized Health Cluster brings together faculty from multiple engineering disciplines to drive innovation in health and health care technologies. The cluster aims to secure major interdisciplinary research funding and enhance the school’s impact in human health and wellbeing. Research interests include wearable and mobile health systems, bioinformatics and computational medicine, data-driven and AI-enabled healthcare, nanomaterials and sensors, and medical device and diagnostic innovation.

Quantum Cluster

The Quantum Cluster brings together faculty across the school who are advancing the applied science and engineering of quantum technologies. Cluster research spans quantum materials, quantum networks and communications, quantum sensing and metrology, quantum physics, and quantum computing. The cluster fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, accelerates innovation, and positions UB SEAS as a leader in the rapidly evolving quantum technology ecosystem.

Energy Systems Cluster

The Energy Systems Cluster builds on UB’s strong foundation in sustainable energy and power engineering to support convergent research that advances the future energy landscape. Faculty in the cluster collaborate to address emerging challenges in clean energy generation, storage, transmission, resilience, and decarbonization. The cluster promotes organic, multidisciplinary partnerships and positions UB SEAS as a leader in next-generation energy and power solutions.
