The policy described here applies to the following student groups

• Students who were previously intended majors within SEAS and were dismissed from SEAS as part of the Periodic Review process for intended majors.
• Students who were conditionally admitted to SEAS and failed to meet the criteria specified for full admission to the approved major.
• Students who were reviewed for admission to SEAS and were declined admission to both the intended and approved major.

Students are eligible to be reconsidered after one academic year following dismissal or denial of admission.

• Example 1: If a student is dismissed from the intended major after the Spring 2016 semester, he/she can apply to enter SEAS for the Fall 2017 semester.
• Example 2: If a student is dismissed following conditional admission after the Spring 2016 semester, he/she can apply to enter SEAS for the Fall 2017 semester.
• Example 3: If a student is denied admission for the Fall 2016 semester, he/she can again apply to enter SEAS for the Fall 2017 semester.

Such students must complete the following requirements to be reconsidered for admission to an approved SEAS major.

1. Complete the Career and Degree Exploration Mini-project.
2. Meet with a career counselor at least once.
3. Meet with an academic advisor a minimum of once per semester.
4. Meet with a Financial Aid advisor at least once.
5. Formally declare a major other than Exploratory Transitions and follow the curricular plan associated with that major for at least one Fall or Spring semester.
6. Complete the four core courses for the desired major with grades of C- or better. Note that students do not need to repeat core courses previously completed with acceptable grades.
7. Complete a minimum of 15 credit hours of technical coursework at UB and/or another academic institution after dismissal or denial of admission and earn a minimum GPA of 2.5 in all technical coursework. A minimum of 9 of the technical credits must be from courses that are not repeated and a minimum of 6 of the technical credits must be at the 200-level or above.

Students who would like to be reconsidered for admission to an approved SEAS major are asked to compile the following items into a single pdf file and email the document to ubengineer@buffalo.edu with the subject “Reconsideration.”

• A statement outlining issues that negatively influenced their previous academic performance and a description of the steps they have taken to overcome these difficulties.
• The Career and Degree Exploration Mini-project.
• A description/reflection of the issues discussed with academic and financial aid advisors and career counselors. The names of career counselors and advisors they met with and the dates of appointments. If meetings were not at the University at Buffalo, the institution where meetings took place should be noted.
• A reflection regarding the extent to which other major(s) they pursued following dismissal or denial of admission aligned with their strengths and interests.
• A table listing the technical courses completed following dismissal or denial of admission (provide the course subject and number, course title, term completed, credit hours, repeat status, and grade for each course). If coursework was completed at another institution during this period, they are expected to provide an unofficial transcript from this institution.

Students must submit these materials at least four weeks before the start of the semester of entry.

Upon a successful review, students are offered conditional admission to the approved SEAS major. The student must then work with a SEAS academic advisor to develop a one semester academic plan. The academic plan provides a list of courses to be completed during the first semester along with course letter grades that are realistically achievable. The plan must be reasonable. Plans that contain more than 15 total semester credit hours, more than 12 technical semester credit hours are generally considered unreasonable. If a realistic plan cannot be developed, the student will not be permitted to enter SEAS.

At the end of the first semester, the SEAS Office of Undergraduate Education will examine the student’s academic performance. Students are expected to follow their academic plan and attain semester technical and UB GPAs of at least 2.5. If the student successfully completes these performance requirements, they will be fully admitted to the approved SEAS major. If the student fails to meet these standards, they will be subject to academic dismissal from SEAS. In this latter case, the student then needs to work with UB's academic advisors to transition to another major.
