Karthik Dantu and Oliver Kennedy, both associate professors in the department, are recipients of the 2023 Technological Innovation Award for “distinguished development, advancement and pursuit of the IEEE’s technical objective,” according to IEEE Region 1.

Dantu earned this distinction based on technical contributions to visual localization and making technologies for mobile systems and robotics. His research focuses on mobile sensor networks; robot networks; networked embedded systems; mobile computing; wireless networks; and embedded operating systems. Dantu also received the Distinguished Research Mentor Program Award in 2016 as part of UB’s Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program.

Oliver Kennedy.

Kennedy’s award recognizes his contributions to incremental view maintenance, understandable reproducible data science and outreach efforts. In 2018, Kennedy received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award for his project, Declarative Uncertainty, which will enable data management systems that can query and organize uncertain data without being hard to use, resulting in a more transparent process.

Bina Ramamurthy.

Bina Ramamurthy, professor of teaching, earned the IEEE Region 1 Outstanding Teaching Award for her outstanding contributions to global education in the emerging area of blockchain technology. This award recognizes “outstanding contributions to education in an area of interest to IEEE.

Ramamurthy is the director of UB’s Blockhain ThinkLab and has worked in STEM research and curriculum development and instruction for two decades. In 2019, she earned the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

“Oliver and Karthik are influential researchers in their own areas, and Bina is a world-renowned professor in teaching Blockchain,” says Jinhui Xu, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. “Being recognized with the IEEE region 1 awards is a great testament of the quality and impact of their work. Our department is very proud of their achievements.”
