The New York Times quoted Kang Sun in an article about why wildfire smoke has a scent similar to burning plastic. Sun explains that when biomass—trees, branches and leaves—burn in wildfires, they emit gases called volatile organic compounds, which might be causing the chemical, plastic smell that many people have reported
