Can buildings be designed to withstand earthquakes?

TRT World, the English language public broadcaster in Turkey, interviewed Michel Bruneau, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, about whether buildings can be designed to withstand earthquakes of the magnitude that occurred earlier this month in Turkey and Syria.

He said current best practices try to “control where the damage will be” in buildings affected by earthquakes.
