Wars are dangerous, reactors much less so

Andrew Whittaker, SUNY Distinguished Professor of civil, structural and environmental engineering, co-wrote an opinion piece in Nuclear Newswire that aims to explain the risks of nuclear power plants in war zones.

The article describes how the reactors operating in Ukraine today are profoundly different from the design used at Chernobyl, and are, by nature, difficult to damage. It states that: “The March 4 attack at Zaporizhzhia had no radiological consequences, as there was no damage to critical reactor systems or safety equipment.”
