Maria Lehman, recently elected member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), was named Samuel P. Capen Professor in UB's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.
As the Samuel P. Capen Professor of Engineering Management, Lehman will bolster the school's engineering management program.
Election to the NAE is one of the highest professional distinctions an engineer can achieve. NAE membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions in engineering practice, research or education. Lehman's NAE election recognized her leadership in public service and business engineering management focused on the sustainability and resilience of critical civil infrastructure.
Lehman is a fellow and former president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and is an elected member of the National Academy of Construction as well. Prior to joining the University at Buffalo, Lehman was the director of U.S. infrastructure for GHD. She has also served as vice president for critical infrastructure at Parsons, and worked as chief operating officer and executive director of the New York State Thruway Authority and public works commissioner for Erie County, N.Y. She has worked on over 700 projects, including the $4 billion replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge near Manhattan, N.Y.
