Here is how we shape structural engineering

Andrew Whittaker and Michael Constantinou receive ASCE's top honors

Andrew Whittaker and Michael Constantinou.

Andrew Whittaker and Michael Constantinou, SUNY Distinguished Professors, were honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for their international leadership and outstanding impact in structural engineering.

Whittaker receives 2026 Ernest E. Howard Award

Whittaker was presented the prestigious award for his distinguished contributions in earthquake, blast, impact, and performance-based engineering, particularly for buildings, bridges, and nuclear power plants. He has shaped many of ASCE’s guidelines and standards — widely regarded as authoritative in civil and structural engineering.

He has also received the ASCE's Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr. Energy Award, Walter P. Moore, Jr. Award, and Nathan M. Newmark Medal, and was named an ASCE distinguished member and fellow of ASCE’s Structural Engineering Institute (SEI).

Constantinou earns 2026 Walter P. Moore, Jr. Award

Constantinou earned the prestigious award for his influential work on seismic protective systems, including seismic isolation and damping systems, for buildings, bridges, and infrastructure. His research has provided key contributions to United States guidelines, codes, and standards for over 30 years, including ASCE standards, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials guide specifications, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) standards.

He has also received the ASCE's Charles Pankow Award for Innovation, Moisseiff Award, and Nathan M. Newmark Medal, and he was named a fellow of both the ASCE and ASCE SEI.
