A team of computer science and engineering graduate students are participating in the first-ever eBay Machine Learning Challenge, to help the industry giant find ways to make sense of its massive amounts of unstructured data.
“Part of it is the practicality. We learn all about theory, but we don’t actually see it put into practice,” says Esteban Orellana, a senior civil engineering student, “this was a good opportunity to actually see it for ourselves.”
Satish Nagarajaiah, who received his PhD in Civil Engineering from UB in 1990, was elected to the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) earlier this year.
Hien Nguyen, a PhD student in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, received the best poster award of the Separations Division at the 2019 AIChE Annual Meeting for his work on carbonized membrane materials.
With finals approaching, student workloads are at an all-time high – and so are stress levels. Undergraduate students Anant Patni and Angad Minhas used their technical backgrounds to create several apps featuring soothing sounds to help others relax.
Alumnus Ken-Tye Yong was elected Fellow of The Optical Society (OSA) “for significant contributions to develop optical functional nanomaterials and devices for biophotonic and nanophotonic applications.”
