The new Conjugate Unscented Transform (CUT) method reduces the time needed to simulate natural disasters, which could help predict space collisions, where volcanic ash spreads and more.

The Center for Industrial Effectiveness (TCIE), the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and The Resource Center (TRC) recently wrapped up a successful partnership that will result in increased employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Susan Mentecki and Sharon Cavanaugh talk proudly about a special needs student who recently secured a part-time job and plans to attend culinary school after graduation. The women, who work for the nonprofit Baker Victory Services of Lackawanna, dream of replicating his success. And they are tapping into the Lean methodology – through guidance of the University at Buffalo TCIE – to help make it happen.

Each year, dozens of undergraduates expand their horizons by working with local companies.

Investigating how latent pesticides affect public health. Creating window coatings that reduce buildings’ heating and cooling costs. Developing policies to promote land conservation. Examining what incentives prompt people to buy hybrid cars. These seemingly disparate activities are not disparate at all – in fact, they reflect a commitment to comprehensive environmental research at RENEW.

The youngsters are enthusiastically building model bridges. The executive from the National Grid is cheering them on, helping them craft these small but meaningful examples of the types of structures engineers design.
