Civil engineering alumnus recognized with J.James R. Croes Medal from ASCE

Makris, whose advisor at UB was SUNY Distinguished Professor Michael Constantinou is the Addy Family Centennial Professor in civil engineering at Southern Methodist University. His research focuses on earthquake engineering, structural dynamics, structural mechanics, historic structures and fractional calculus.

Markis and his co-author Mehrdad Agholizadeh earned the J. James R. Croes Medal for their paper Effect of Supplemental Hysteretic and Viscous Damping on Rocking Response of Free-Standing Columns published by the Journal of Engineering Mechanics of ASCE in 2019.

The James R. Croes Medal awards a paper submitted as part of the process for another ASCE award, the Norman Medal. The review committee is made up of representatives from ASCE’s Committee on Technical Advancement and one representative from each Institute in ASCE.

Makris also received the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize of ASCE in 2001, the Shah Family Innovation Prize from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute in 1999, the T.K. Hsieh Award from the Institution of Civil Engineers, London, U.K. in 1997 and the Henry Pusey Award in 1997.  He was elected member of Academia Europaea in 2012.
