At UB, a historic hiring push to bolster research and diversity

A story by The Buffalo News on UB's plan to expand its faculty ranks by 5% to 10% over the next two years mentions several grant-funded research projects by the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS).

Projects include a $20 million National Science Foundation grant to create the AI Institute for Exceptional Education, a $7.5 million Department of Defense grant to improve testing of semiconductor chips, a $5 million U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory grant to monitor space debris, and an $8.5 million Department of Energy grant to study hybrid rockets. 

The story also mentions that last year’s New York State budget included funding for the construction of a new $102 million SEAS facility.

In all, UB wants to add 200 tenure-track faculty in the next two years, double its number of underrepresented faculty in five years and more than double its annual federal research grant funding to $1 billion by 2030.
