The highly cited researcher list highlights an elite group of researchers who have produced multiple papers with a combined citation rank within the top 1% in Web of Science. The list also identifies scientists whose multiple highly cited papers have had significant influence during the last decade.

“Panos’ inclusion on this list demonstrates the impact he has made on our Department, and on the transportation engineering field more broadly,” says Joseph Atkinson, professor and chair in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, “his work on transportation safety, driving simulation, statistical and econometric modeling and other areas will help advance the science of transportation engineering.”

Only five faculty members from the SUNY system were included on this list, and four of those researchers are part of UB's faculty. About 6,000 researchers, faculty members or scientists worldwide are included in the list. Anastasopoulos is one of two transportation engineers featured on this list.

Anastasopoulos’ research ranges from traffic safety and engineering economics to the reliability and sustainability of infrastructure systems and crisis management. He has presented multiple papers at international conferences, and has collaborated with government agencies, the professional industry and representatives from the School of Management, Industrial Systems Engineering Department and other entities at UB.

Researchers are selected for the highly cited list based on their performance in one or more of 21 fields in the Web of Science Group’s Essential Science Indicators (ESI). The papers chosen in the 2019 list were published and cited between 2008-2018, and rank within the top 1% by citations for their ESI field and year.

Anastasopoulos joined UB in 2013 and has secured over $3.5 million in funding from organizations like the Federal Highway Administration, New York State Department of Transportation, European Commission and other groups. He earned his PhD in Civil Engineering from Purdue University.
