Chief Operating Officer, New York Power Authority
Joe Kessler is the Chief Operating Officer of the New York Power Authority. Prior to that, he was SVP of Power Generation since March 2012. In this role, Joe is responsible for the oversight of NYPA’s fleet of generating facilities across New York State, representing 6000Mw of Hydro and Fossil Generation, approximately 450 personnel with an annual operations and maintenance budget of $250M and a capital budget of over $165M (includes support of transmission work). He is also Executive Sponsor of NYPA's Safety Administrators Working Committee, Vice-Chairman of NYPA’s Asset Management Board and a member of NYPA’s Strategic Management Committee.
The previous three years he was Regional Manager/Western New York at the New York Power Authority’s Niagara Power Project. He is a lifelong Western New Yorker who has worked in the electrical industry for nearly 30 years. His early career was with the electrical construction firm T.H. Green (formerly Buffalo Electric Construction Corp.). This was followed by a stint WESCO as an Advanced Product Specialist, and at Trautman Associates in Buffalo, as an Electrical Designer. Joe started at NYPA in January 2001, as an Engineer in the electrical maintenance department. Joe held several positions within that department until his promotion to Regional Manager in July 2009. This career path gave Joe diverse experiences ranging from reliability centered maintenance, management, design and construction, and consulting.
Joe earned his BS in Electrical Engineering (1993), MEng (2000) in Electrical Engineering (Energy Systems), and an MBA (2010) from the University at Buffalo, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New York.
Joe is on EPRI’s Generation Sector Council, Senior Member of the IEEE, Director of the Erie-Niagara Chapter of the NYSSPE and a member of the IAEI, IESNA, and NETA.
He lives in West Seneca with his wife Lisa, and three children, Jordan (16), Garrett (14) and Emily (12).
