Principal Civil Engineer, Applied Research Associates
Daniel D'Angelo, PE, BS ’83, has enjoyed a long career in transportation infrastructure beginning with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), where he served in several senior roles including director of design, director of design quality assurance, deputy chief engineer, and lead innovation coordinator.
After his NYSDOT career, D'Angelo joined Applied Research Associates Transportation Infrastructure Division as a principal civil engineer. In his current position, D'Angelo focuses on innovation deployment, risk management, project management and alternative contracting methods. He has served as project manager on several FHWA projects, including the Bridge Preservation Guide, Bridge Bundling Guidebook, Alternative Contracting Methods Evaluation Toolset, EDC5 support for project bundling and value capture.
He is a member of several National Academies of Science research projects including mid- and long-range cost forecasting for infrastructure projects, framework for constructability analysis, and Post-Award Contract Administration for Highway Projects Delivered Using Alternative Contracting Methods. He is a National Highway Institute instructor for risk management.
D'Angelo is a graduate of the University at Buffalo with a BS in Civil Engineering (1983), and Norwich University with an MBA in Organizational Leadership. In addition to his professional engineering license, D'Angelo is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP), and Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP). He is active in national and international professional organizations, and previously served as national chair of the Strategic Highway Research Program’s Renewal Technical Coordinating Committee.
D'Angelo is the Advisory Board chair for the University at Buffalo Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering Department. He is a member of the New York State Board for Engineering, Land Surveying and Geology, appointed by the NYS Commissioner of Education. D'Angelo has been recognized several times as an outstanding reviewer for the ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering, and is on the editorial board.
D'Angelo joined the Dean's Advisory Council in 2020.
