Junsong Yuan

IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and Fellows are conferred annually based on their outstanding accomplishment in an IEEE field of interest. Yuan was selected based on his contributions to “human behavior understanding and video analytics.”

“We're very happy that the IEEE Fellowship committee has recognized Junsong’s significant contributions to computer vision,” said Chunming, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. “He is an extremely prolific and highly respected researcher in the field and we are proud of him.”

Yuan, an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and director of the Visual Computing Lab, is among three UB researchers elected to the 2021 class of IEEE fellows. The others are Amit Goyal, Director of UB's RENEW Institute and a SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering; and Thomas Thundat, Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and UB RENEW.

Yuan's research interests include computer vision, pattern recognition, video analytics, and large-scale visual search and mining. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Adobe, Snap and Microsoft, among others.

He was elected Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition in 2018. He served as senior area editor of the Journal of Visual Communications and Image Representation and associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Image Processing and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology.

Additional honors and awards include the best poster award from the International Conference on Computer Vision 5th Workshop on Observing and Understanding Hands in Action in 2019, best paper award at the International Conference on Advanced Robotics in 2017, and a best paper award from the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia in 2016.

Yuan joined the University at Buffalo in 2018 from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where he was an associate professor with tenure. He received his master’s degree from the National University of Singapore and his PhD in electrical and computer engineering from Northwestern University in 2009.
