From art to part: Engineering Design Camp

Each summer, the University at Buffalo offers a week-long Engineering Design Camp for high school students interested in STEM careers. Participants are guided by UB faculty and students from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences through hands-on exploration of design and advanced manufacturing. Participants “tear down” products to learn what’s inside, program and use robots, design and build using 3-D printers, engage in team activities, and visit a local state-of-the-art manufacturing center.

Engineering Design Camp is sponsored by UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Northrop Grumman.

A team works through the challenge of combining building hardware, wiring, the electronics, and programming the behavior of the robot.

Teams built their robots from kits and 3D printed components, connecting together components, soldering wires, and designing custom components.

Students learned to build and program their own robots.

Teams work together to write code and then transfer the programs to control the robots.

Two participants work on getting everything in place on the robot.

Students had to test their programs, with the robot following the line completely on its own.

Testing the robot's ability to clear a path and follow the line based just on the sensors.

Students also designed their own plows to clear a wider path as the robot follows the line.

Multiple teams worked independently, watching and learning from other team's successes, with the guidance of experts in robotics.
