Non-tenure-track Faculty Reappointments

Is your department ready to recommend a non-tenure-track faculty member for reappointment? Review this SEAS checklist to ensure you have everything you need to make it happen.

Reappointment Recommendation Checklist

Review the items below to ensure you have everything you need to recommend your SEAS non-tenure-track faculty member for reappointment.

1. Chair's letter

The chair's letter should minimally include a discussion of:

  • Department discussion and vote
  • Achievements in scholarship/research, teaching or service as applicable
  • Recommendation

2. Internal Faculty/Mentor Letter (optional)

Requesting a Promotion?

If you are requesting a promotion, the following are required:

  • 2 internal evaluator letters
  • 1 external evaluator letter

The internal faculty member/mentor letter of recommendation is optional unless you are requesting a promotion. If you are requesting a promotion, the following are required:

  • 2 internal evaluator letters
  • 1 external evaluator letter

3. Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Ensure SEAS Faculty CVs conform with the school's CV template.

4. Statements

  • Research Statement (required for research faculty)
  • Service Statement (required for practice faculty)
  • Teaching Statement (required for teaching faculty)

5. Student Evaluation Summary (including representative comments) if applicable

Non-tenure track reappointments at Associate level and above

In some cases, full-time, non-tenure track faculty at the internal rank of Associate Professor or full Professor (of Teaching, Research or Practice) may be eligible for an expedited review process.  If your appointment is set to expire in the next academic year and are eligible for this process, you are not required to submit any documents in support of the reappointment; your department chair will notify our office that reappointment is supported, and you will be issued an appointment letter.

Eligibility

If you were promoted to the Associate or full Professor rank (either through review by the Qualified Rank Committee or a previous process), you are eligible for expedited renewal after your promotion has been approved.

If you were appointed at the Associate or full Professor rank, you will follow the standard reappointment process until you receive a three-year renewal.  After the first three-year renewal, you will follow the expedited renewal process.

Note that departments can request a traditional reappointment review at any renewal point.  The department chair will indicate this well in advance of the reappointment date, and the faculty member will be contacted to supply the Teaching, Research and/or Service statements, updated CV, course evaluations, etc.
