Dr. Jongmin Shim joined UB in 2013 following the completion of his PhD at MIT and postdoctoral training at Harvard. His research centers on structural instability which has length-scale independent characteristics. Dr. Shim is interested in applying elastic instability to design both resilient structural components at macroscale and mechanical metamaterials at microscale. Through computational and experimental analysis, he explores the various instability mechanisms and intends to tailor instability to achieve non-conventional functionalities of structures and materials. He is currently investigating weakening-induced snap instability, pattern transformations in granular crystals, and viscoelastic mechanical metamaterials.
