The book is an update to Chung’s 2010 publication of the same name. It covers the science and applications of functional materials in a comprehensive manner that is suitable for readers that do not have background on the electrical, dielectric, electromagnetic, optical and magnetic properties of materials. The volume is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students in materials science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and aerospace engineering. More information is available here.

Chung is a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University at Buffalo. She is ranked No. 14 by the 2020 Stanford University study among 177,931 materials scientists in the world (living and deceased) and No. 1 among those who are female. She is a Fellow of the American Carbon Society and has authored or coauthored over 600 archival peer-reviewed journal publications.

A pioneer and international leader in the field of multifunctional structural materials, Chung has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout her career, including an Honorary Doctorate degree from the University of Alicante in Spain; the Charles E. Pettinos Award, a triennial international award that recognizes outstanding research accomplishments in carbon science and technology from the American Carbon Society; the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities from the State University of New York (SUNY); and the Outstanding Inventor award from SUNY.

She received her PhD in Materials Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her BS from Caltech.
