A slimmer smartphone means mountains of e-waste

An article on Motherboard, the science and technology magazine of Vice Media, examines e-waste research by Sara Behdad, assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

“My question is, how can we make the whole system of e-waste recovery profitable?” said Behdad. “At some point, I noticed that we needed to go back to the origin—product design.”

Big Think also quoted Behdad on her research, “Disassembly [of thinner products] usually cannot be done automatically. If you want to recover components, you have to use manual labor,” she said.
