All the instructors are great and have practical knowledge about their respective fields.
How is this program preparing you for your career?
This program is helping me establish goals and learning new skills to be successful in my career. This program teaches management and system analysis skills to design and improve industrial systems that can be applied to any field, e.g., manufacturing, supply-chain, health care, information technology, etc. I learned how to compare various alternatives to select the best one by using multi-attribute utility theory (weight assignments) and logical decisions. Often in our daily lives or jobs, we have to pick the best out of many alternatives, but we often rely on our gut rather than using systematic techniques. After learning the systematic techniques in this program, my problem-solving approach has changed fundamentally. As a software engineer, I can apply these techniques to software development as well. I can unequivocally say that this program helped me get my current job. And now I am applying skills learned in this program such as lean management methodologies to improve IT infrastructure costs at my current job.
Do you have any advice for incoming students?
This course is unique and one of the best Engineering Management courses in the country. I advise part-time students to take two courses per semester and one course in the summer to make their learning experience enriching and fun at the same time. This course is equally beneficial for recent undergrads and working professionals where students learn to work in groups, plan and manage time, give and receive feedback on assignments, and develop strong communication skills. Moreover, group work enhances learning, retention, delegate roles and responsibilities, learning from each other, time management, making connections, etc. So, I would recommend making good use of group projects and assignments.
Why did you chose this program over a traditional MBA?
This program is specially designed for the Engineers keeping in mind their thinking and management style. I liked the core courses and choice of electives offered which are a good mix of management and engineering.
