When United States Postal Service (USPS) mail arrives with missing or inaccurate address information, it is considered undeliverable. Common issues include unknown or missing department names, incomplete building addresses, or illegible acronyms.

Proper Mailing Address

All incoming mail and packages for faculty & staff should be addressed using the following format:

Name
Department
Room number & Building name
Buffalo, New York  Zip Code

Campus Mail uses the university directory (LDAP.buffalo.edu) to identify the correct address for misaddressed First-Class mail, periodicals, and parcels. If the search is successful, the mail piece will be re-addressed and sent out the next business day. Please note that this process may add 1-3 days to the delivery time. If Campus Mail cannot locate a correct address, the mail piece will be returned to the sender.

The only exception to this process is incoming non-profit and bulk rate mail that does not have an ancillary service endorsement. In cases of incorrect address information, mail is either returned directly to the sender or recycled by Campus Mail. Any mail within this category that cannot be re-addressed on campus or returned to the sender will be recycled.
