UB CBE Professor Miao Yu is part of the largest Advanced Research Projects Agency– Energy grant ever awarded, with about $1.5M coming to UB, plus $500k matching from New York State, to study renewable ammonia production and utilization.

In this project, Yu's group is solving the challenge of producing high purity H2 from ammonia decomposition by designing a novel hollow fiber membrane reactor running at <450°C.  The team will work on engineering design of an integrated system composed of a highly active catalyst for ammonia decomposition, H2-selective membrane, and catalytic H2 burner. At the end of the project, a prototype for producing 5kg H2/day will be fabricated and installed on vehicles for field demonstration.
