Mostafa Nouh named fellow of ASME

Mostafa Nouh, an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Nouh is recognized for distinguished research contributions to the mechanical engineering field as well as over a decade of dedicated service to the society.

“Mostafa’s recognition demonstrates the respect of his peers for his influence and contributions to our profession,” said Francine Battaglia, professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. “His election as a fellow also demonstrates his dedication and commitment to education and UB.”

Nouh joined the ASME in 2009 as a student and has been a professional member since 2013. He has taken several leadership roles within ASME’s technical community.

“Being named ASME Fellow is truly an honor,” said Nouh. “It is a privilege given to less than 5% of ASME’s professional members, recognizing their distinguished career and engineering achievements. On a personal level, I consider ASME to be my home society and one that I am proud to have been a member of since I was a graduate student.”

In 2016, Nouh was elected as a member of ASME’s Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Branch and became a senator of the newly founded Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems (SMASIS) division in 2022. In 2017, he was elected to the Executive Committee of the Noise Control and Acoustics Division (NCAD) for a 5-year term and became the division chair in 2021. Within NCAD, Nouh played a leading role in the organization of the annual Rayleigh Lecture and the initiation of the Journal of Vibration and Acoustics Best Paper Award.

From 2017 to 2019, he co-chaired the Energy Harvesting Symposia at the ASME SMASIS conferences. In 2018 and 2019, he chaired the Student and Young Professional Development Symposia and in 2022 he was elected as a member of the ASME Technical Committee on Vibration and Sound. He has also served as an associate editor of the ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics since 2020.

Some of Nouh’s research interests include structural mechanics and vibrations, smart and adaptive materials, acoustic metamaterials, thermoacoustic energy generation and harvesting.

Nouh is a 2019 recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. He also received the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry program Research Mentor of the Year Award in 2021 and the UB Young Investigator Award and the ASME Gary Anderson Early Achievement Award in 2020.

Nouh received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Cairo University in 2008 and both his MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
