Javid Bayandor Receives ASME Dedicated Service Award

Javid Bayandor, an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, received the 2023 American Society of Mechanical Engineer’s (ASME) Dedicated Service Award. The award recognizes unusual dedication to voluntary services and acknowledges outstanding performance, demonstrated effective leadership, devotion, enthusiasm and faithfulness to the society.

Established in 1983, the award requires at least 10 years of service to ASME. Bayandor has served the ASME Fluids Engineering Division (FED) as chair, lead organizer and editor of three FED symposia. He served as the vice chair of the Fluid Mechanics Technical Committee in 2008 and chair from 2010-2014. From 2014-2020 Bayandor was on the FED Executive Committee and from 2018-2021 he worked on the Engineering Science segment of the committee.

“It has been a genuine surprise and great honor to receive this important Society-wide dedication award, for which I am extremely humbled,” said Bayandor. “Collaborating through ASME with diverse groups of dedicated and talented engineers from many countries to help advance the engineering fields and profession has been one of the most cherished experiences of my career, along with conducting research and training our very capable next generation professionals in a variety of STEM areas.”

In 2012, Bayandor started the Graduate Student Steering Committee (GSSC) to promote graduate student participation and active involvement within the FED technical committees along with fostering the overall growth of FED.

At the University at Buffalo, Bayandor leads the Crashworthiness for Aerospace Structures and Hybrids (CRASH) lab. He studies kinetics and collisions between drones, as well as other objects such as birds or hail, and piloted aircrafts. His research interests also include solar system exploration, aerospace design, space physics, ballistics, bioinspired robotics, advanced aerospace structures and fluid-structure interactive systems

Bayandor was presented with the award at the ASME Fluids Engineering reception on Oct. 31, 2023, which coincided with the International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition in New Orleans.
