Scholarships for SEAS Undergraduate Students

Due to the generously of our donors, SEAS awards over $600,000 in scholarship funds annually. All scholarships are administered through the UB Scholarship Portal. To be eligible for SEAS scholarship funding, you must complete the online application.

  • Sign into the Scholarship Portal with your UBIT credentials.
  • Complete both the General Application and the SEAS Conditional Application. This will ensure you are matched with any scholarships you are qualified for.
  • A number of scholarships require you to respond to additional scholarship-specific prompts.
  • Check the portal regularly to review scholarship deadlines and requirements.

UB Scholarship Portal Tips

  • Be sure to answer all application questions thoroughly to give yourself the best chance at qualifying for one or more scholarships. This is your opportunity to explain why you are in need of scholarship funding, and how these funds would impact your success at UB. Tell your story!
  • For personal essay responses, your unique perspective is required. Express your story in your own words and avoid relying on AI tools for assistance.
  • Most scholarships award funds to multiple recipients. If you qualify for an opportunity, apply!
  • Check back regularly. Scholarships are added to the portal throughout the year.

Funds for Study Abroad and Experiential Learning

SEAS has a few funds that specifically support experiential learning: study abroad, undergraduate research, unpaid internship.

  • If you are looking for funding to support a study abroad trip, complete the Study Abroad Conditional Application.
  • If you are looking for general funds to support experiential learning, which can also include study abroad, complete the Experiential Learning Conditional Application.

You must have a developed experiential learning, or study abroad, plan before submitting these conditional applications.

Searching for Available Scholarships Opportunities

The easiest way to search for available SEAS scholarships is by using the “Show Filters” option. Log in to the UB Scholarship Portal and select “Our Opportunities.” You will find the “Show Filters” button at the top right-hand side of the page. Here you can search by relevant Scopes: Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, SEAS Undergraduate Scholarships, etc. You can select multiple items from this list to narrow your search.

Application and Award Timeline

  • The scholarship portal closes each year on July 1. At that time, all applications from the previous year are archived.
  • To have the best possible chance of being awarded a scholarship, return to the portal early in the Fall semester. The majority of SEAS scholarships open at the end of August and close during the month of September.
  • Most scholarships are awarded during October or early November.
  • There are a few scholarships that are awarded during the Spring semester.
  • Experiential learning scholarships are typically open both Fall and Spring.

Scholarships for New SEAS Students

There are a number of scholarships available to incoming undergraduate students who have been accepted into a SEAS major. Students accepted to UB will receive an email to the address with which they applied to the university in early spring describing the application process. You may log into the UB Scholarship Portal to apply for individual opportunities once your UBIT login credentials are issued.

Other Scholarship Opportunities

Many professional organizations, both local and national, have scholarship opportunities. The number of possibilities is too large to list here. However, as an example, in 2022-2023, The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) awarded scholarships totally over $1,800,000. Search the professional societies associated with your major to learn more about available scholarships.

The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) also provides scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 to students studying at an approved engineering school in New York State. To be eligible, students must be in the third year of a four-year program. The scholarship deadline is typically early in January. UB engineering students have been successful in the past.
