James W. and Nancy A. McLernon Superior Scholars Award

The McLernon Superior Scholars Award was established in 1978 by James and Nancy McLernon to attract or recognize exceptional engineering students.

About the Donors

James McLernon (BS ’50) is a distinguished alumni who was born and raised in Kenmore NY.  After completing his WWII military service, McLernon attended the newly formed UB School of Engineering where he met his late wife Nancy, then a student in the School of Nursing.  McLernon led an innovative and successful career in the automotive industry. By the time he retired in 1997, McLernon's resume listed such high-level positions as general manufacturing manager of GM's Chevrolet Division, president and chief executive officer of Volkswagen of America and chair of the board of American Axle & Manufacturing. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the UB Foundation.

  • Academic excellence


  • Applicant is accepted into the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
  • Graduating high school student.
  • Successful student will be required to write a thank you letter to the donor.

  • Recommendation: Letter of recommendation from teacher or advisor is required
  • Deadline: March 31
