Felix Smist Scholarship

The Felix Smist Scholarship was established in 2005 by James (Jim) and his wife Mary to honor Jim’s late father, Felix Smist. Felix Smist persevered to complete his mechanical engineering BS in 1965 from UB, after 16 years of part-time study. During this time, he worked full-time and raised a family.It is the donors intention to offer one new scholarship each year.


  • Full resident tuition and fees for coursework required in the major

Selection Criteria

  • Student studying under similar circumstances as Felix Smist


  • Applicant is accepted into the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), studying part-time or full-time
  • Applicant majors in one of the degree programs offered by SEAS
  • If the student is working they must not be receiving any other significant source of financial assistance towards their education
  • Scholarship may be awarded for up to 6 years provided the student remains in academic good standing in SEAS
  • Successful student will be required to write a thank you letter to the donor

  • Application: Go to eng.buffalo.edu/undergrad/apps/scholarship. UBITName and password are required to apply. Highlight in your scholarship-specific narrative how you are studying under similar circumstances to Mr. Felix Smist.
  • Recommendation: Letter of recommendation from job supervisor or advisor is required
  • Deadline: March 31


  • Scholarship recipient will be chosen by a faculty/staff committee
