More efficient transistor poses threat to silicon's reign, say engineers

Gizmodo reported that a research team at UB led by Jonathan Bird and researchers from the the University of Nebraska Lincoln teamed up in a new study, published in Advanced Materials, to design a more efficient, non-silicon transistor.

"A new, more energy efficient transistor may cut global digital energy consumption and make devices smaller and cooler," Gizmodo reported, noting that "Keke He, Jonathan Bird, and their research team have cracked a new way to design a transistor by relying on electrons’ spin instead of their flow." Bird is professor and chair of electrical engineering, and He is a PhD candidate.

The research was published in Advanced Materials.
