Ren recognized with IEEE award for cloud security and wireless security contributions

Kui Ren, professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has received the 2017 Communications & Information Security Technical Committee (CISTC) Technical Recognition Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Ren, who was named an IEEE Fellow in 2016, is recognized for his “outstanding contributions to cloud security and wireless security.”

Given annually, the CISTC Technical Recognition Award aims to promote research and development in communications and information systems security by recognizing IEEE Communications Society members who have made outstanding contributions to the technological advancement of security.

“This award confirms that Kui is an internationally recognized leader in cloud and wireless security. I'm very proud to have him as a colleague,” said Chunming Qiao, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

The award ceremony will be held at the next CISTC meeting during the IEEE International Conference on Communications in Paris on May 21-25, 2017.

Ren, who joined UB in 2012, is the director of the university’s Ubiquitous Security and Privacy Research Laboratory (UbiSeC Lab), which carries out research in data and computation outsourcing security in the context of cloud computing, wireless systems security in the context of Internet of Things, and crowdsourcing-based large-scale data acquisition.

His honors and awards include a UB Exceptional Scholar Award for Sustained Achievement in 2016, a SEAS Senior Researcher of the Year Award in 2015, the distinction of IEEE Distinguished Lecturer in 2014, a Sigma Xi/IIT Research Excellence Award in 2012, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2011, and the prestigious IEEE International Conference on Network Protocols Best Paper Award in 2011.

He holds a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and a master’s degree in materials science and engineering and bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Zhejiang University.
