Who invented chess?

Live Science quoted Kenneth Regan, associate professor of computer science and engineering, for its story on the origins of chess.

There is no credible evidence that chess existed in a form approaching the modern game before the 6th century. In time, however, the game became standardized. Regan highlight the influence of 15th century mathematician Luca Pacioli. “He was an important popularizer,” said Regan, an international chess grand master.

"Besides there being historical attributions in India earlier than in the Middle East, I take a nod from linguistics," Regan, an international chess master, told Live Science in an email.
