Three faculty receive IEEE Region 1 awards

This year, three faculty members in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering were recognized by the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) Region 1 chapter for their technological innovation.

Tevfik Kosar, Dimitrios Koutsonikolas and Wenyao Xu are recipients of the 2019 Technological Innovation Award for distinguished development, advancement and pursuit of the IEEE’s technical objectives. IEEE Region 1 is home to the IEEE organizational units of the northeastern U.S. Founded in 1963, IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization, with more than 423,000 members in over 160 countries around the world.

“In 2018, three CSE faculty received IEEE Region 1 awards. Having three more winners this year is a testimony to the very strong faculty in our department,” says Chunming Qiao, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. “I am very proud of them.”

Tevfik Kosar

Tevfik Kosar, associate department chair and professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, earned a 2019 Technological Innovation Award for significant contributions to the field of data intensive distributed computing by developing novel techniques for end-to-end data throughput optimization and decreasing the energy footprint of global data movement. Kosar was also the recipient of the SEAS Research of the Year and Senior Teacher of the Year awards, both in 2018.

Dimitrios Koutsonikolas, an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and director of the UB WiNS lab, received a 2019 Technological Innovation Award for significant contributions in wireless networking, including experimental wireless networking and mobile computing.

 

 

Wenyao Xu.

Wenyao Xu

Wenyao Xu, an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and director of the Embedded Sensing and Computing (ESC) lab, received a 2019 Technological Innovation Award for his outstanding contributions to the areas of Internet of Things and smart health. His contributions include innovation on autism screen apps and the invention of footwear health sensors called Smart Insole, both of which have impacted millions of individuals.
