An article on GizMag reports that three UB undergraduate students have designed a pre-emptive marine autopilot system for recreational boat owners that automatically takes over the driving when a threat is identified and steers the vessel to its final destination.

The article includes a UB-produced video that interviews the students who developed the system.

The technology can also anticipate weather conditions, floating obstacles and other hazards not readily seen by some of today's navigation equipment.

Tech Times also reported on the system, and quotes Alex Zhitelzeyf, one of the group’s co-founders. “Essentially, you will connect your smartphone or laptop to the system,” he said. “From there, you use your device to tell the system where you’d like to go. It then guides the boat, from port to port, using the safest, most efficient route possible.”
