The liar’s dividend of deepfake tech means we don’t trust what we can see

City A.M. interviewed Siwei Lyu, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, in an article on the dangers of deepfake technology. 

While governments have woken to the problem of deepfake videos, Lyu said that legislation alone cannot do all the heavy lifting. “Users are also accomplices: they retweet, they share, they contribute,” Lyu said. 

He believes the best way to engage with the issue is to improve users’ awareness and resilience to fake media.
