In an article about proposed federal efforts to regulate artificial intelligence, The Buffalo News notes UB’s extensive programs involving the technology, including a $20 million project that uses AI to help children with speech and language challenges.
The article quoted David Doermann, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and director of UB’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.
“We can do real out-of-the-box type of applications in absolutely every domain that you have, from education, finance, medicine, materials, all types of engineering, all these types of things,” he said. “And people want to do that.”
The article also quoted Siwei Lyu, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and director of the Center for Information Integrity, from a UBNow article.
“In the initial stages of development, no one was thinking seriously about the dark corners of this remarkable technical development,” Lyu said.
