Cheating Allegation Looms Over Elite Chess

A New York Times story the about Mangus Carlsen’s continuing protest against Hans Niemann, the latest cheating scandal to rock the chess world, mentioned a software program developed by Kenneth Regan, professor of computer science, designed specifically to detect cheating.

The system is trusted by FIDE, the international governing body of chess. Although Regan concluded that Niemann was probably not cheating, as he explained to Chess News, there are critics who question how well Regan’s model can detect a player who uses computer assistance sparingly, in order to avoid detection.
