In the summer before her senior year, Pavone participated in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program as part of the George E. Brown Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES). She worked under the supervision of Andreas Stavridis, assistant professor of civil engineering, in UB’s Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory.

It was through this opportunity that Pavone wrote her winning paper, "Effect of Window Openings on Reinforced Concrete Frames with Masonry Infill.”

Andreas Stavridis and Laura Pavone attended the EERI Annual Meetinge, where Laura was presented with the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Paper Award.

Pavone received the award at the EERI Annual Meeting, which was held March 31-April 3, 2015, in Boston.

The competition aims to promote active involvement of students in earthquake engineering and the earthquake hazards community. Pavone’s paper was reprinted in the 2015 EERI Annual Meeting Program.

After graduation Pavone plans to continue her education at the Masters level in structural and earthquake engineering.
