3.8 magnitude earthquake hits Buffalo, wakes region with boom shortly after 6 a.m.

The Buffalo News spoke with Michel Bruneau, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, about the 3.8 magnitude earthquake that was felt across the Buffalo Niagara region Monday morning.

The earthquake is nothing the public should be alarmed about, Bruneau said, noting they occur frequently in Western New York, but on a scale that often goes unnoticed. “There are earthquakes all the time here,” he said. “They tend to be small — 1.7, 2.3, 2.9 — but every now and then you get bigger ones.”
