An article in The Wall Street Journal about the role geography and building codes played in Tuesday’s deadly earthquake in Mexico City quotes Andreas Stavridis, assistant professor of civil, structural and environmental engineering.
Stavridis, who specializes in earthquake-resistant construction, discussed a “reverse thrust” earthquake that occurred more than 30 years ago and was 30 times more powerful than Tuesday’s quake. “What happened in Mexico in 1985 was a far different quake,” he said.
