Five of Anastasopoulos' articles have been cited over 100 times, including one publication cited over 350 times during the surveyed time period (2009-2019). He is one of three faculty members at UB, and one of two in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to earn this status.

“This recognition represents Panos’ success in developing a highly regarded body of work, which continues to grow.” says Joseph Atkinson, professor and chair in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, “His research advances the transportation engineering field, and he also has been instrumental in developing the Stephen Still Institute for Sustainable Transportation and Logistics at UB.”

Only 6,400 researchers were recognized as 2020 Highly Cited Researchers, and 2,500 researchers were recognized for “cross-field performance,” according to Clarivate Analytics. Anastasopoulos is one of the researchers identified for cross-field performance.

In 2020, 6,167 (including 26 Nobel laureates), or about 0.1%, of the world's researchers, in 21 research fields and across multiple fields, have earned this exclusive distinction, according to Clarivate Analytics, Anastasopoulos is among this elite group recognized for his exceptional research influence, demonstrated by the production of multiple highly-cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in the Web of Science.

The methodology that determines the “who’s who” of influential researchers draws on the data and analysis performed by bibliometric experts and data scientists at the Institute for Scientific Information™ at Clarivate. It also uses the tallies to identify the countries and research institutions where these scientific elite are based.

"In the race for knowledge," says David Pendlebury, senior citation analyst at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate Analytics, "it is human capital that is fundamental and this list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at UB who are having a great impact on the research community as measured by the rate at which their work is being cited by others."

Anastasopoulos is an associate professor and Stephen E. Still Chair of Transportation Engineering in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering. He is also the director of the Stephen Still Institute for Sustainable Transportation and Logistics and the director and founder of the Engineering Statistics and Econometrics Application Research Lab. He joined the University at Buffalo in 2013.
