PP and PE are used as packaging materials, snack wrappers, microwave containers, and other flexible, plastic films. Their flexibility  makes them resilient to recycling processes, and these plastics often end up in landfills or leak into the environment.

University at Buffalo scientist Amit Goyal has been named associate editor-in-chief of The Bridge, the flagship quarterly journal of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

She hopes that the research will allow physicians to better predict how to promote regeneration across different tissue systems in the body. 

Innovations include AI-driven ceramics, next generation contact lenses, semiconductors, copper ink and more.

Mark Swihart, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, was recognized by UB’s Graduate School with the Excellence in Graduate Student Mentoring Award (EGSMA). 

Plastics Today highlighted research by Paschalis Alexandridis into an AI-spectroscopy system that would make sorting plastics for recycling more efficient. 

Amit Goyal, SUNY Distinguished Professor and SUNY Empire Innovation Professor was honored for his lifetime research and innovative contributions, impact and accomplishments including the 2025 CHAI 2025 Person of the Year Award.
