Academics

The Department of AI and Society is a new transdisciplinary department that centers on the crucial need to understand artificial intelligence tools and their impacts to society.

Our department, part of UB's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and College of Arts and Sciences, serves as a hub for transformational research and education in AI across the university. We are pleased to support one-of-a-kind bachelor's degrees following an AI+X model—an approach that allows for advanced study in areas that transcend the boundaries of traditional disciplines. Graduate programs are to be developed at a later date.

Based in AI and its Societal Impacts

AI+X degree offerings combine coursework on AI technologies, and the relationship between AI and society, with coursework in another area relevant to AI. All AI+X degrees consist of the following components:

  • Mathematical prerequisites as needed for the specific degree;
  • A Society Core consisting of a selection of five three-credit courses focusing on the relationship between AI and society;
  • A Technology Component that draws on a set of four-credit courses in mathematics, statistics and probability, computer science, and data science that can be combined as needed for a specific degree;
  • Integrative Courses that provide training on the use and impact of AI—or other relevant computational and mathematical approaches—in the “X” domain of the degree;
  • A Capstone Experience where students from different AIX majors, as well as students majoring in general AI degrees, will work together on specific problems at the intersection of AI and society in an experiential learning setting.
