DREAM is a hands-on makerspace for students who want to turn ideas into real projects. Use tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics kits, and design software. Get help from trained student assistants. Work on class assignments, club projects, startups, or personal creations. Beginner friendly and open to all University at Buffalo students.

What you can do with DREAM

DREAM — Design, Realize, Explore, Apply, Model — gives UB students access to the tools and support to build real things.

3D Design and Printing

A DREAM student assistant trains other students on equipment in the DREAM makerspace.
  • Create models in CAD and print physical prototypes.

Laser Cutting and Fabrication

  • Cut wood, acrylic, and sew fabrics for projects and displays.

Electronics and Microcontrollers

  • Build circuits and smart devices using Arduino and Raspberry Pi.

Soldering and Assembly

  • Learn hands-on electronics assembly for hardware projects.

Prototyping for Class and Startups

  • Develop physical parts for senior design, research, and entrepreneurship.

Who can use DREAM

DREAM is open to all students. No prior experience is required.

You can use DREAM if you are:

  • A University at Buffalo undergraduate or graduate student
  • Working on a class assignment or capstone project
  • Building something for a club or competition
  • Exploring a startup or product idea
  • Learning technical skills to strengthen your resume

Some equipment may require a short safety or skills training before use.

Getting started with DREAM

Getting started is simple and beginner friendly:

  1. Join DREAM in UBLearns. Sign up for access, announcements, and training modules.
  2. Visit during Open Lab Hours. Walk in, meet a student assistant, and ask for help with an idea.
  3.  Attend a workshop. Complete the required sign up for any workshops of your liking, and complete safety or machine training if needed.
  4. Start building. Use equipment, get guidance, and bring your project to life.

Earn micro-credentials

You can earn micro-credentials, digital badges that show your hands-on technical skills, by completing workshops and hands-on projects. 

These badges help you:

  • Demonstrate real world tool experience
  • Strengthen your resume and LinkedIn profile
  • Show a commitment to experiential learning

Q: Do I need experience to participate in DREAM?
A: No experience is required. The program is designed for beginners.
