The Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (CDSE) program hosted its inaugural CDSE Days, a weeklong event that highlighted developments in the burgeoning big data and big compute fields.  Six keynote speakers presented their research and eight hands-on workshops were offered during the week of March 23-27, 2015.

Following an introduction by SEAS Dean Liesl Folks, two keynote speakers kicked off the event. Omar Ghattas, from the Institute of Computational Engineering and Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin, shared big-data applications on understanding sea level rise from melting polar ice sheets. Michel Dupuis, who joined UB as a senior CDSE faculty member this January, illustrated the benefits that high performance computing contributes to the fields of chemistry and materials science.

Other keynote speakers included Barry Schneider from the NIST Applied and Computational Mathematics Division, Vijay Raghavan from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Craig Douglas from the University of Wyoming, E. Bruce Pitman from the University at Buffalo, and Norma Jean Nowak, Peter Winkelstein, and Tom Fulani from the Buffalo Institute for Genomics and Data Analytics.

The eight hands-on workshops offered throughout the week focused on developing data-driven programming skills. Approximately 200 students and faculty members attended these workshops, which included tutorials on Apache Accumulo, libMesh, Dakota, R, ParaView, and Avogadro 2.

"CDSE days exposed our students to the many exciting possibilities and opportunities in this area. It brought leaders in the field to Buffalo, showcased our faculty and highlighted our pioneering efforts in program development. The mix of frontier topics and core skills was well appreciated by all," said Abani Patra, director of the CDSE program and professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.

The CDSE program, one of UB’s “E”-fund initiatives, is a collaboration between the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, College of Arts & Sciences, School of Management, and School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. A PhD-granting program is planned for the Fall of 2015. For questions regarding the program, please contact Laura Dombrowski at lauradom@buffalo.edu.
