UB CBE student Jada Mowatt has been accepted as one of the University at Buffalo's GEM Fellows. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) selected Jada to receive a GEM PhD Fellowship as a member of their 2025 GEM Fellowship cohort. As part of this award package, she will be completing an internship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, TN as part of their Fuel Cycle Chemical Technology Group on treating uranium-concentrated groundwater from metals and radionuclides while using membrane and separation processes.

Jada is currently working with Professors Haiqing Lin and Mark Swihart on a research project involving utilizing surface-modified nanofiltration membranes with chelating agents to enhance lithium recovery. She is working to propose the use of membranes containing chelating agents, such as EDTA, to separate out salts, like MgCl2 and LiCl, out of a brine which is otherwise difficult to do. In his letter of support for Jada, Professor Lin commended her persistence in pursuing perfection and excellence, her strong problem-solving skills, and desire to drive research projects.
