Marina Tsianou Receives 2021 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching

The award honors Dr. Tsianou's superb teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels. 

Dr. Tsianou has been dedicated to teaching a range of classes including thermodynamics and electives relating to her research in molecularly engineered nanomaterials. The Tsianou research lab has mentored 8 doctoral, 25 master's, and 40 undergraduate students. Dr. Tsianou and her students have published over 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals and given over 130 presentations at scientific meetings. Her students describe her as a dedicated and inspiring mentor who shows genuine concern for her students. In 2010,  undergraduate engineering students elected her Professor of the Year,  and five years later her peers awarded her the SEAS Senior Teacher Award.

According to CBE Department Chair Mark Swihart, "Prof. Tsianou is well-known as an effective instructor, mentor, and advisor whose concern for students is evident in all of her interactions with them. She has had a tremendous positive impact in the department at both the undergraduate and gradute levels." 

Dr. Tsianou has also spent time presenting workshops to attract women to the STEM field at the Tech Savvy conference, organized by the American Association of University Women. Dr. Tsianou has served as the faculty advisor for the UB student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is a founding member of UB's Women in Science and Engineering program.
