Step 1 for Master's: Apply for graduation via the HUB Student Center

  • Students must Apply for Graduation through HUB to declare their intention to graduate.  Instructions can be found here.
  • Students completing an exam, paper, project or portfolio: Your department must complete the appropriate culminating experience milestone in HUB.

How to apply

Currently Enrolled Students Students Who Are Not Currently Enrolled

Go to your HUB Student Center and apply for graduation online before the application deadline date. Once your application has been received, your degree status can be found in your Student Center in the HUB.

If you are no longer enrolled at UB, but are still planning to graduate, you must apply for graduation online before the deadline. The application can be submitted as early as one semester before your last semester at UB, but no later than the application deadline.

Please note:

When you apply for graduation, you are only applying to receive your degree and your diploma. You may still have to register separately to take part in a commencement ceremony (See Step 2).

Step 1 for PhD: Complete the Application to Candidacy (ATC) and Surveys

Step 2: Register for Your Commencement Ceremony

If you want to participate in your commencement ceremony, please note that the ceremony requires you to register in advance, get tickets for your guests, and follow other guidelines. Please visit UB Commencement Website (School of Engineering and Applied Sciences: Graduate section) to register.

Step 3: Schedule Your Defense / MS and PhD Only

You may schedule your defense day/time here.

Defense Conducted Remotely for Summer 2020

Your dissertation or thesis defense taking place this summer will be conducted remotely, and made public by being available to relevant students and faculty via an online meeting tool such as WebEx, Zoom or Skype.

Step 4: Complete Your M-Form and Submit Your Electronic Master's Thesis or PhD Dissertation

Step 5: Make Sure You've Met All Graduation Requirements

  • For Master students, please review your degree status on HUB Academic Advisement Report on MyUB. All requirements must be satisfied on this report in order for your degree to be conferred.
  • Check with your advisor to make sure you're on track to graduate.
  • Make sure UB has official final transcripts on file from any other college or university you may have attended.
  • All final grades must be in by the conferral dates. Make sure Study Abroad, independent study and internship grades have been submitted.
  • Update your name and address with the Registrar to ensure that your diploma is properly prepared and sent to the correct location.

Step 6: Settle Your Accounts

Be sure to pay your outstanding bills. Diplomas and transcripts will not be released if you have an outstanding financial obligation to the University. You can view any holds in your HUB Student Center. If you need to change your degree conferral date you will need to complete a Petition to Change Expected Conferral Date.

Step 7: Order Your Cap and Gown

Graduating students who are participating in their commencement ceremony wear academic apparel (cap/tam, gown, hood and tassel). Learn how to get your academic apparel here.
