I chose UB because it is receptive to embracing ambitious students from any culture or background. I’ve really enjoyed the diversity and dynamic atmosphere here, as well as the state-of -the–art research facility and stringent academic environment.   

My research with Dr. Pfeifer is discovery of natural products through Metagenomics. We are in urgent need of novel antibiotics due to the emerging resistance of bacterial strains like MRSA, MDR-TB etc. In our lab, we harness E. coli as a heterologous host to express environmental microbial genomic DNA in order to search for new bioactive compounds. Our new discovery could save thousands of lives who are suffering from bacterial infections.
